With the ICC Under-19 World Cup just days away, South Africa’s young cricketers have been urged to believe in their talent as they prepare to face the world’s best on African soil.
Bowling coach Paul Adams, who forms part of head coach Malibongwe Maketa’s backroom staff, says confidence and adaptability will be key as the tournament gets under way in Namibia and Zimbabwe next week. South Africa open their campaign against Afghanistan on 16 January in Windhoek.
Adams believes the World Cup represents both a major opportunity and a crucial learning phase for players who are still at an early stage of their careers. While results matter, he stressed that understanding the rhythm of the game and handling pressure situations are just as important at this level.
He explained that younger players must continue refining their technical skills, especially when stepping up against elite international opposition, where the margins for error are far smaller than in age-group cricket at home.
There is optimism within the camp about conditions in Windhoek, particularly at the High Performance Oval, where the squad has played recently, as per the SABC. Adams said the players’ familiarity with the pitch, surroundings and facilities should help them settle quickly once the tournament begins.
Strategically, South Africa are keeping their options open when it comes to batting first or chasing totals. Adams said decisions will be made based on match-day conditions, with factors such as the pitch, weather and overall state of play influencing each call.
He added that the team has been preparing for a wide range of scenarios, ensuring they are not caught off guard regardless of how matches unfold.
According to Adams, this World Cup squad has been in the making for some time. The coaching staff has worked closely with many of the players for around two years, tracking their development from as young as 16 through tours, training camps and competitive fixtures.
That long-term planning, he believes, has given the coaches a clear understanding of each player’s strengths and how they can contribute when the pressure is at its highest on the global stage.
