The City of Cape Town is gearing up to host the much-anticipated One Day International (ODI) match between the South African national men’s cricket team, the Proteas and Pakistan this afternoon, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The game, set to take place at the iconic Newlands Cricket Ground, is part of a thrilling three-match ODI series between the two nations.
Proteas must win to stay in the series
Following Pakistan’s impressive victory in the opening match at Boland Park in Paarl, the series currently stands at 1-0 in favor of the visitors. With the Proteas facing the pressure of needing a win to avoid a series defeat, the match promises to be an exciting clash between two competitive teams.
‘The City of Cape Town is thrilled to host the Proteas and Pakistan for the summer of cricket in our beautiful city. We welcome both teams and the travelling fans to the Mother City for what is shaping up to be an exciting battle,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. ‘Cape Town has become synonymous with the summer of cricket with Newlands Cricket Ground’s rich history of hosting international cricket since the late 1800s. The City is working with the event organisers to put measures in place that ensure we can get spectators to and from the stadium safely to experience a memorable cricket spectacle.’
Logistics for spectators
For those attending the match, gates at Newlands Cricket Ground will open at 12:00 PM, with the first ball set to be bowled at 2:00 PM. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the full experience.
To make attending the match easier, the City of Cape Town has designated several parking areas for spectators:
- Groote Schuur High School
- Groote Schuur High Lower Field
- Groote Schuur Primary School
Additionally, a dedicated drop-off and collection point has been set up at the corner of Palmyra and Campground Roads, just past the Groote Schuur High School field.
Road closures and traffic advisory
To ensure the safety of attendees and smooth traffic flow around the stadium, several road closures and restrictions will be in place on the day of the match. The following roads will be closed from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM:
- Campground Road (from Campground and Mariendahl Roads to Palmyra Road)
In addition, motorists are advised that there will be no stopping on the following roads:
- Mariendahl Avenue at Subway
- Mariendahl Avenue to Kinkel Way
- Palmary Road between Mona Crescent and Mariendahl Avenue
- Campground Road
- Kinkel Way
- Mona Crescent
- Letterstedt Road to Main Road (North Bound)
- Letterstedt Road to Boundary Road (South Bound)
- Main Road between San Sui Street and Boundary Road (North Bound)
- Main Road between Boundary Road and Letterstedt Road (South Bound)
- Main Road from Letterstedt Road to Camp Ground Road (South Bound)
- Main Road from Glenhof to Spring Water Drive Way (North Bound)
- Palmyra Road in front of Groote Schuur High (Embayment)
The City urges all residents, fans, and motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel to avoid disruptions.

As Cape Town prepares to welcome the two teams and cricket fans from around the world, the excitement for this thrilling ODI continues to build. The two teams will return to Cape Town again in the New Year for the traditional New Year’s Test at Newlands from 3 January 2025.
