Durbanville residents have been cautioned against keeping large sums of cash in their homes or safes following several house robberies in the area, where large amounts of money was stolen.
This was seen after a complainant and his wife were awakened by three unknown suspects inside their home in Sonstraal Heights on Monday.
They were threatened with a knife by one of the suspects, who demanded money from them, threatening to kill the husband if they failed to show the suspects where the safe was.
“The suspects took cell phones to the value of R90 000, a laptop to the value of R17 000, R120 000 from the safe, and a TV worth R9 000. Suspects also took the complainant’s Toyota Fortuner and fled with it,” reports Durbanville Community Police Forum – CPF.
It was reported that the suspects gained entry by forcing a window open, and no suspects have been arrested at this stage.
In another incident which took place at the beginning of February, a complainant was awakened by his wife who informed him that there were three unknown suspects in their home in Eversdal at 3:30am.
They were threatened with a firearm and forced to keep quiet. They were then tied up with cable ties while the suspects demanded money and other valuables.
“Suspects took a laptop to the value of R30 000, jewellery to the value of R100 000, a watch of R12 000, two cell phones worth R27 000 and a BMW vehicle worth R80 000,” Durbanville Community Police Forum – CPF adds.
The suspects fled the scene and the vehicle was found abandoned in the Brackenfell area.
Merely days before that on 27 January, a complainant, her two children and her helper were at home in Oude Westhof when four unknown males entered the main door, went upstairs and gun pointed the complainant. The helper was in the kitchen.
They told the complainant that they’ll kill her child if she doesn’t tell them where the money is. They strangled the complainant and helper, and took the safe that was in the stockroom, containing R38 500. The suspects fled the scene by jumping over the fence.
