A 41-year-old woman was shot in the neck and killed while sitting in her car on the R300 highway on Saturday night at 8:22pm. Police reports confirm the victim had just finished changing a tyre when attackers opened fire.
Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, verified that no robbery occurred, leaving motives unclear.
The Freedom Front Plus political party has demanded emergency interventions from SANRAL, SAPS and metro police, citing over 200 recorded crimes on this stretch in 2023.
No arrests have been made so far, as the investigation continues.
The killing follows a pattern of highway violence, including the recent airport-bound couple ambush on N2, 200+ criminal incidents logged last year and non-functional CCTV cameras on critical routes.
Freedom Front Plus councillor Emre Uygun stated: ‘Visible policing is clearly inadequate… SANRAL must reactivate cameras immediately.’
The R300 highway shooting amplifies concerns about Cape Town’s highway safety crisis. As confirmed by the Cape Argus, the incident shares chilling similarities with other N2 Hell Run attacks where motorists are targeted.
Transport records indicate the R300-N2 corridor has become a crime hotspot, with SANRAL’s own data confirming stone-throwing, robberies, and shootings persist despite being a major airport route. Law enforcement sources suggest the lack of working cameras severely hampers investigations.
The victim’s identity remains withheld pending family notification, while forensic teams work to determine if the shooting links to broader highway crime syndicates.
With peak holiday travel approaching, the killing has intensified calls for immediate safety upgrades on Cape Town’s most dangerous roads.
