Cape Town’s major R9 million underground electricity cabling project in Hazendal is fast approaching completion, with the finish line expected by mid-November. The initiative marks another key investment in strengthening the metro’s energy grid while improving reliability for residents and local businesses.
As shared by the City of Cape Town, approximately R6.3 million of the allocated budget has already been spent, with teams working efficiently, carrying out the work with minimum disruption to customers. The project is part of a broader effort to modernise and secure power infrastructure across Cape Town.
‘This investment, along with others, is essential to the security of our infrastructure, ensuring reliable energy supply to residents and businesses,’ said Alderman Xanthea Limberg, mayoral committee member for Energy.
The Hazendal project involves replacing traditional overhead power lines with underground cabling, a move that brings multiple benefits.

Underground power systems are less vulnerable to weather-related damage, such as storms or falling trees, and help reduce electrical hazards involving people, vehicles or animals. They also deter vandalism and theft, a persistent challenge that the City continues to combat.
Another advantage? Cleaner cityscapes. Removing poles and overhead wires ‘greatly improves the visual appeal of an urban area’, transforming neighbourhood aesthetics while boosting functionality.
The City highlights that undergrounding also serves as a theft deterrent, thanks to the lower resale value of underground materials.
‘Our transition to more modern and resilient infrastructure is an important part of our long-term vision to improve supply and reduce the cost associated with theft and vandalism,’ Alderman Limberg added.
