Decked in his coolest shirt, President Cyril Ramphosa addressed the nation this evening, September 30. A collective sigh of relief and jubilee could be heard across South Africa as the President announced that the country would move from adjusted level 2 to adjusted alert level 1.
Here‘s a summary of what President Ramaphosa had to say:
- Ramaphosa makes a point of noting that 17 million doses of the vaccine have been administered, 8.6 million are fully vaccinated, which is 1/5 of the adult population of South Africa.
- Administering 16 million vaccines for the year appears to be the goal, this means that the country needs 250 000 first dose vaccinations a day to meet the target.
- The current trends in the progression of the pandemic mean a number of restrictions can be eased as Ramphosa announces that South Africa will move to Adjusted Alert Level One.
- Curfew: 12am to 4am
- Restaurants and bars will close by 11pm. Maximum people indoors will be 750, while outdoors 2000. 50% capacity for venues, with funerals having a max of 100.
- Alcohol sales are still permitted, but no sale after 11pm.
- The Department of Health will be rolling out vaccination certificates soon which will be used to facilitate travel and access sites.
