President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was re-elected for a second term after the ANC lost its full majority, introduced his new Cabinet on Sunday night, which includes members of the Democratic Alliance as well as representatives from different other political parties who have agreed to serve in the Government of National Unity.
Despite a last-minute drive by Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to join the Government of National Unity, under the condition that the DA and Freedom Front Plus not be included, Ramaphosa reached an agreement with DA leader John Steenhuisen that will see the DA oversee six ministries. The DA was also assigned six deputy ministries.

Ramaphosa announced that the deputy president will be Paul Mashatile while the leader of the DA, John Steenhuisen was given the position of minister of agriculture.
Ramaphosa said that the establishment of the Government of National Unity in its current form is unprecedented in the history of the country’s democracy.
‘We have had to consider how to form the new government in a manner that advances the national interest, that gives due consideration to the outcome of the election and that makes use of the respective capabilities within each of the parties,’ Ramaphosa said.
We have had to consider not only the immediate needs of the country.

- Minister Home Affairs: Leon Schreiber

Ramaphosa stated that certain portfolios must be separated to guarantee that essential concerns receive adequate attention.
He disclosed that the ministries of electricity and energy will be unified, with a separate ministry for mineral and petroleum resources.
The Ministry of Agriculture will be separated from the Ministry of Land Reform and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Higher Education from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development will be separated from the Ministry of Correctional Services, and there will be no more Ministry of Public Enterprises.
‘The coordination of the relevant public enterprises will be located in the Presidency during the process of implementing a new shareholder model,’ Ramaphosa said.

This comes after weeks of negotiations, leaked letters, and public spats, which culminated in the DA and ANC reaching an agreement on Saturday after crisis talks over cabinet slots were resolved.
After failing to receive more than 50% of the vote in the May 29 General Elections, the ANC, led by Ramaphosa, has been obliged to govern South Africa in collaboration with other parties.
The seventh administration began with the signature of a statement of intent by the ANC, DA, Patriotic Alliance, GOOD, Al Jama-ah, Rise Mzansi, PAC, UDM, IFP, FF Plus, NFP, and UAT.
