President Cyril Ramaphosa has reshuffled the higher education ministry in a bid to strengthen governance and restore public confidence in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Dr Nobuhle Nkabane has been removed as Minister of Higher Education and Training, with Buti Kgwaridi Manamela taking over the portfolio.
In terms of Section 93(b) of the Constitution, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, drawing on her experience as KwaZulu-Natal Premier and MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
According to a statement released by the presidency, the reshuffle is aimed at reinforcing accountability and ensuring the ministry is led with integrity.
Primedia+ reported that the Democratic Alliance welcomed the move, describing it as a step towards restoring trust in the GNU.
DA MP Karabo Khakhau said it signalled that misconduct in higher education would not be tolerated.
The Freedom Front Plus and Rise Mzansi also expressed support, while the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s Mnqobizitha Msezane noted that capable leadership is essential following concerns over irregular SETA board appointments.
The presidency emphasised that the appointments align with its constitutional mandate and reaffirm the GNU’s commitment to rooting out corruption and prioritising public service.
