President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office has responded to leaks stemming from a candid 7-minute audio recording of his discussion with members of the African National Congress (ANC) caucus.
In the leaked conversation, Ramaphosa provides insights from his recent engagement with Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen, labelling the DA as having ‘put themselves in an unenviable situation.’
This characterisation echoes comments made by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who warned that the DA’s refusal to support the budget would effectively distance the party from the Government of National Unity (GNU).
The ramifications of this standoff are significant, as coalition dynamics continue to be tested amid rising economic challenges faced by the country.
According to EWN, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya has defended the president’s position, asserting that the leader was not aware he was being recorded during this candid exchange.
‘He was engaged in a political discussion with his comrades, and there was nothing particularly offensive about what he said,’ Magwenya remarked, indicating that leaking the audio should not alter Ramaphosa’s commitment to maintaining a stable coalition with continued DA participation.
Magwenya further acknowledged the troubling trend of information leaks within the ANC, pointing to recent similar occurrences within the Cabinet, EWN reported.
‘He is well aware of the terrible culture of leaking information from his own party,’ he added.
In a related twist, the DA has taken aim at ActionSA for its collaboration with the ANC in endorsing a controversial 1% increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT) over the next two years.
The DA condemned this decision, labelling it as an unwarranted financial strain on South African citizens that would exacerbate existing economic hardships.
Further complicating the situation, the DA voiced strong objections to the approval of the budget by a party operating outside the GNU, characterising it as a significant breach of established political protocols.
