Starting 1 October 2024, MyCiTi passengers will enjoy lower fares as the service adjusts prices in response to ongoing fuel cost reductions, Cape {town} Etc reports.

According to MyCiTi, the adjustment is mandated by the City of Cape Town’s annual budget, which allows for fare increases or decreases when diesel prices fluctuate significantly.

This ensures passengers aren’t overcharged when fuel costs drop, while safeguarding the City from enduring financial losses if prices rise sharply.

‘As a result, the cost savings are transferred to our MyCiTi commuters. We welcome this fare reduction during these harsh economic times as every cent counts. The monthly pass remains great value for money by offering passengers unlimited travel on as many routes and as many times as they wish, not only to work but to explore the City on weekends and holidays,‘ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas.

‘The MyCiTi fares make provision for changes during the financial year based on significant changes to the cost of diesel.’

‘This helps protect passengers from paying too much if the cost of diesel is reduced and protects the City from ongoing losses if the cost of diesel continues to increase significantly.’

Peak fares apply to journeys starting on weekdays from 06:45am to 8am and from 4:15pm to 5:30pm

Off peak (Saver) fares apply to all other times, including all day on weekends and public holidays.

A new myconnect card will remain R40 and passengers won’t pay any more for penalties incurred when they don’t tap in and out correctly.

  • 5-10 km: from R17.50 to R16.50 (Peak), R12.50 (Saver)
  • 10-20 km: from R22.50 to R21.50 (Peak), R17.50 to R17.00 (Saver)
  • 20-30 km: from R24.50 to R23.00 (Peak), R20.50 (Saver)
  • 30-40 km: from R27.50 to R26.50 (Peak), R22.50 (Saver)
  • 40-50 km: from R30.50 to R29.00 (Peak), R26.50 to R25.50 (Saver)
  • 50-60 km: from R34.50 to R33.00 (Peak), R29.50 to R28.50 (Saver)
  • 60 km+: from R37.50 to R35.50 (Peak), R31.50 to R31.00 (Saver)
