Movie lovers across the city are in for a nostalgic treat this October, as Ster-Kinekor rolls out its popular Throwback Cinema programme, offering a curated slate of classic films for the price of a large popcorn.
For just R50 a ticket, audiences can experience iconic movies like the iconic animated masterpiece Aladdin and the chilling thriller The Silence of the Lambs as they were meant to be seen on the big screen.

The initiative, which was first launched in May last year, is designed to make a night out at the movies both affordable and memorable. A report from MyBroadband outlines the October lineup, which also includes beloved romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail, as well as the modern James Bond adventure Skyfall. The programme will run at four major Ster-Kinekor complexes in the Cape Town area, providing accessible entertainment for a wide range of tastes.
The selection of films offers what the cinema chain describes as ‘a wonderful mix of genres, ensuring there is something for everyone.’ This month’s lineup allows different generations to share the experience, whether it’s introducing children to the magic of a Disney classic or allowing adults to revisit the films that defined their youth.

Ster-Kinekor’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lynne Wylie, explained the concept’s appeal. ‘Throwback Cinema is our way of giving audiences the chance to experience, or re-experience, some of the world’s most memorable films on our screens,’ Wylie said. She emphasised that the R50 ticket price makes it an affordable night out at the movies.
For Cape Town residents, the convenience is a major factor, as Ster-Kinekor confirmed that Throwback Cinema titles will be screened at four key locations: At Blue Route, the V&A Waterfront, Capegate, and Tygervalley. The nearby Somerset Mall in Somerset West is also participating, making the programme accessible to viewers across the broader metro.
The October screenings kick off with the 1992 Disney classic, Aladdin. The film is celebrated not only for its vibrant animation and storytelling but for the legendary voice performance by Robin Williams as the Genie.
