Human remains believed to be those of a missing SANDF soldier were recovered on Monday from the Nkomazi River near the South Africa-Mozambique border, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to The Citizen, a local fisherman spotted what looked like a body part floating in a remote river stretch.
The fisherman approached the bank and found a human head lying among river debris close to where the SANDF patrol vehicle was later located.
Police said the head was on the riverbank and not floating when officers reached the scene.
Search-and-rescue divers, ground teams and aerial units were dispatched to the area to continue the recovery and look for further remains (EWN).
One SANDF member’s body was recovered on 26 December after the pair were swept away while attempting to cross a low-lying bridge on Christmas Day during Operation Corona.
The SANDF confirmed the vehicle had been retrieved and said the second member remained missing.
‘Tragically, the body of one SANDF member has since been recovered. The second member remains missing,’ the SANDF said.
Mpumalanga police urged caution, noting fast currents and debris hinder the operation and that scavenging by crocodiles may explain why only part of a body has been found so far.
‘The search for the missing SANDF member is continuing. This is a collaborative effort,’ Mpumalanga police said.
