The call-out began when four foreign hikers missed the last cable car and shelter staff asked for help. Teams found the visitors cold but safe and guided them down Platteklip Gorge.
While ascending, rescuers spotted smoke and made an immediate report. ‘Rescue Teams double as ‘Eyes & Ears’ in the Wilderness,’ the WSAR post said.
SANParks rangers arrived quickly and extinguished the fire, preventing a larger incident on the front face of Table Mountain. The joint response kept hikers and neighbourhoods safe.
SANParks has stressed the need to report fires fast and to avoid actions that risk fynbos and homes.
The operation ended just after midnight, with all hikers and rescuers off the mountain by 00h15. WSAR thanked every team involved and reminded the public to save the emergency number, 021 937 0300 and to consider supporting volunteer groups.
‘We extend our appreciation to all responding teams and agencies for their swift action and continued dedication,’ the organisation said.
