Residents of popular Cape Town neighbourhood Vredehoek are appealing to Heritage Western Cape (HWC) to oppose the demolition of the Deer Park Café building. The building, situated on Deer Park Drive, is home to the Woodlands Eatery, Con Brio, and Deer Park Café.

Speaking to the Cape Times, HWC Chief Executive, Mxolisi Dlamuka, said that the matter will be heard by the HWC’s built environment and landscape committee. “There is nothing much to divulge until the committee has made a decision,” he said.

The building is earmarked to be demolished, and will make way for a four-storey apartment block. Residents have expressed concern that another block of apartments in the area will reduce the neighbourhood’s charm and allure.

“As local residents we are also extremely concerned that the proposed development – which from what we understand is intended to be a large four-storey, 31-apartment building – will not fit in with the surrounding built and natural environment,” the owner of Woodlands Eatery, Santini Mateo, told the Cape Argus.

The matter will be tabled before the Heritage Council on 28 November.
