The City closed the Rietvlei section’s land-based portions due to significant flooding that damaged boardwalks, roads, paths, and picnic sites in July.
Upon conducting an assessment, the reserve crew discovered substantial damage to both the Sunset bird hide and the boardwalk leading to it. As a precaution, the Sunset bird hide and the boardwalk stretch heading there will both be temporarily closed to the public while the reserve team does the required repairs.
Fortunately, the Old Friend’s bird hide is accessible to the general public. In order to guarantee visitor safety for the remaining walkways and bird hide, reserve staff members have cleaned the debris off the boardwalk.

‘Our Table Bay Reserve management monitored the water levels at Rietvlei and conducted daily patrols and investigations of the recreational areas. I am happy to say that the situation has improved over the past weeks and that this section is now open to the public again. I want to thank all for their support and remind visitors that the Sunset hide is unfortunately inaccessible until further notice,’ said the City’s deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews.
