The City of Cape Town is urging the public to prepare for significant disruptions to traffic as the annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) takes place on Thursday, 12 February.
Hosted this year at the iconic City Hall, the event draws considerable attention and will see road closures implemented in an effort to manage traffic and security concerns in the city centre, reports Cape {town} Etc.
From 7 February to 28 February 2026, motorists can expect altered traffic patterns, with certain roads in the Central Business District (CBD) closed off to facilitate safe access for dignitaries and officials.
The closures will affect the flow of vehicles leading up to, during, and following the address, limiting available parking and increasing pressure on alternative routes.
The City’s Traffic Services will install signage throughout the affected areas to provide clear guidance for motorists.
However, residents and commuters are strongly advised to consult the available list of road closures and plan their travel routes in advance to minimise inconvenience.
- Limit non-essential travel in the CBD during the period surrounding the event.
- Factor in additional travelling time if you must navigate the CBD and its surroundings, as traffic is expected to be heavier than usual.
- Plan your routes carefully to avoid blocked areas and detours.
- Keep intersections clear between traffic light changes to facilitate better flow and prevent further delays.
- Exercise patience and courtesy during this busy time.
