‘This contract is more than a business opportunity; it’s a responsibility to preserve and protect a vital part of South Africa’s heritage,’ says Mantsi Moiloa, public sector group head at Broll Property Group, who will take over the reins of management at Robben Island.
Considering the iconic island’s current state of disrepair, Broll’s contract has been much anticipated, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Last year, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Sihle Zikalala visited the site to inspect progress on upgrades made to its infrastructure.
Over the years, buildings, cemeteries, gardens, recreational facilities, waste management services, and the blue stone quarry had significantly deteriorated, placing the island at risk of losing its heritage status.

In a company statement, group Chief Executive officer Malcolm Horne underscored Broll’s dedication to preserving South Africa’s cultural heritage.
‘As we step onto Robben Island, we carry forward this legacy, committed to preserving not only the island’s physical heritage but also its profound impact on South Africa’s history.’
‘Our primary goal is to preserve its historical integrity while incorporating modern efficiencies to ensure its sustainability for future generations. As guardians of heritage, we ensure that Robben Island will remain a beacon of history and culture for future generations.’
Robben Island is mostly known as the site where former president Nelson Mandela was held prisoner during the apartheid era. The measures approximately 3.3 kilometres in length and 1.9 kilometres in width and is only accessible by sea.
Broll plans to bring in Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) professionals with expertise in conservation techniques, and will also incorporate Internet of Things (IoT) tools to improve monitoring and management of the property’s systems.
In addition, the company will implement water-saving methods to reduce usage and promote sustainability, such as efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning, LED lighting and advanced insulation techniques.
