Reports suggest that the state-of-the-art surgical robot ” Da Vinci X-i” cost just over R30 million. The Robotic Surgery Coordinator at the hospital, Dr Samkele Salukazana, indicated at the launch that the multi-million rand equipment can do amazing things like 360-degree movement in the hands, which doctors can’t do during conventional Laparoscopy.
EWN who was present at the launch reported further that patients will benefit from the robot as it will help in reducing the risk of infection, blood loss as well as reducing the number of days that they will be in the hospital.
The Western Cape Premier Alan Winde also took to social media to congratulate Groote Schuur Hospital, saying that the Da Vinci Xi Robot will use nearly 20 years of learning how to enhance surgical performance by creating a natural extension of a surgeon’s eyes and hands.
