A post circulating on TikTok and Facebook has called for a so-called ‘National Shutdown’ on Thursday, 4 September 2025, demanding political resignations and threatening highway blockades.
The call does not originate from any recognised political party, union or civic organisation, and investigators say it shows no formal structure behind the effort.
In a Facebook post, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) dismissed the rumours as fake news, stating that there is no planned taxi shutdown and confirming that SANTACO Western Cape is not involved in any such arrangements. The organisation urged the public to ignore the false messages and rely on its official platforms for updates.

It’s reported that the original call comes from a single low-engagement account and has not achieved widespread traction online.
Other major labour federations and mainstream political parties have not published statements endorsing a nationwide shutdown, which reduces the likelihood of large-scale coordinated action.
Previous shutdown rumours have been labelled as fake news and propaganda.
Isolated attempts at protest or disruption remain possible, but it’s advised that commuters, small-business owners and public institutions treat the 4 September claim as unverified and plan as normal.
Residents who observe organised or violent activity are asked to report it to SAPS and avoid taking part in unauthorised gatherings.
The Interagency Threat Operations Centre (ITOC) will continue to monitor developments and issue updates as information becomes available.
