In a shocking incident that has sent chills through the running, hiking, and cycling communities, a runner was reportedly stabbed by three male suspects in the Deadman’s Tree area, close to Tafelberg Road on Wednesday morning, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The attack occurred between 7:15am and 7:30am, raising alarm bells about the resurgence of violent crime in one of Cape Town’s most cherished natural landscapes.
However, the recent surge in violent crime on the mountain has begun to overshadow its allure. Take Back Our Mountains voiced concerns about safety following a string of violent incidents that could deter visitors from exploring this iconic location.
‘Over the past two weeks, I have guided several tours to Table Mountain, Boulders Penguin Colony, and the Cape of Good Hope with tourists from around the world,’ TBOM noted.
‘One of the biggest concerns raised by almost every group is the crime on Table Mountain and how fearful they are of visiting,’
Take Back Our Mountains called for immediate action, highlighting the need for enhanced surveillance and ranger presence at popular trails.
‘By now, we should have CCTV cameras monitored 24/7, together with a stronger visible ranger presence at the busy trailheads,’ TBOM urged. ‘These are important measures to help improve visitor safety and protect South Africa’s tourism industry,’
With the peak tourism season approaching, the urgency to address the prevailing crime rates is palpable. ‘If more isn’t done to address crime, incidents like these will continue to affect both public safety and visitor confidence,’ TBOM added.
As crime casts a shadow over the mountain, safety experts recommend that those engaging in outdoor activities take greater precautions. ‘Please take care out there. Whether you’re running, cycling, or hiking, avoid going alone and, where possible, travel in larger groups,’ TBOM advises.
Table Mountain Watch has also weighed in, emphasising the need for increased awareness among National Park users and visitors. ‘It’s time, once again (rinse repeat) for us as National Park users and visitors to start thinking about our safety and security, as we fast move towards Spring and Summer in Cape Town,’ they stated.
Questions haunt the community as to whether the anticipated spike in muggings has come earlier than expected, and whether enough has been done by authorities to combat this alarming trend.
