South Africa’s cultural landscape has lost one of its most celebrated voices, with internationally acclaimed opera singer Mimi Coertse passing away peacefully at her home in Pretoria.
According to TimesLive, her death was confirmed by a close friend, who shared that the soprano died in her sleep, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of performance, mentorship and cultural contribution.
The family has indicated that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course, as tributes begin to gather across the country and beyond.
Born in Durban in 1932, Coertse’s journey to international recognition began at an early age. Her musical path took her from South Africa to Austria, where she refined her craft and soon found herself on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.
Her career gained significant momentum when she was signed by the Vienna State Opera, where she performed for nearly two decades, cementing her reputation as a soprano of rare calibre.
Further insights highlighted by Jacaranda FM point to the breadth of her repertoire, which included works by composers such as Mozart, Bach and Puccini.
Coertse’s achievements extended well beyond the stage, as Austria recognised her contribution to the arts with the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1996, one of the country’s highest honours.
Her influence also carried into academia, where she received honorary doctorates from both the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa.
After returning home, she shifted her focus toward nurturing the next generation. Through coaching and bursary initiatives, she played a pivotal role in opening doors for aspiring classical singers, many of whom went on to build careers internationally.
Relive the moment as Mimi Coertse delivers a commanding performance of ‘O, Boereplaas (Queen Of The Night Part 4)’.
