In a pressing plea for action, the community group Take Back Our Mountains has once again highlighted the increasing frequency of robberies on Table Mountain, raising concerns about the safety of both local and international visitors, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The iconic landscape, which is recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is currently grappling with a surge in crime that is leaving many feeling vulnerable and anxious.
The group expressed its discontent through social media channels, stating, ‘This ongoing issue is having a significant negative impact on tourism, and our daily users are feeling scared, angry, and disheartened as they can no longer safely enjoy their activities on the mountain.’
The sentiment is echoed by both male and female victims who have reached out, sharing their harrowing experiences and mounting fears as they traverse the beloved trails, the group said.
Citing a blatant deficiency in security measures, Take Back Our Mountains noted, ‘In 2025, it’s well past time to implement a robust safety plan designed specifically to address and combat crime.’
The members argue that the same trails and parking areas are repeatedly targeted year after year, prompting a sense of helplessness within the community and fatigue over repeated calls for help.
The group also emphasised that many community members are eager to contribute their ideas and support towards creating effective solutions but are disenchanted by the sluggish response from authorities. A clear message persists: action is necessary to protect one of South Africa’s most treasured landmarks.
In light of the current crisis, Take Back Our Mountains has issued a cautionary note urging hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to remain vigilant. ‘Your safety is of utmost importance,’ the group advised, encouraging all visitors to exercise additional care while on the trails.
