The Russian-owned superyacht, Cloudbreak, has been docked in the Cape Town harbour. Its owner, Russian businessman Alexander Alexandrovich Svetakov, is currently facing sanctions in both the US and the EU as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The superyacht costs approximately R2,1 billion and is reportedly 72 metres in length.
Cloudbreaker features an array of luxuries such as a helipad, spa, underwater lights and a beach club. In addition, a total of 12 guests may be accommodated in six cabins.
The ‘nautical masterpiece’ arrived in the Mother City earlier this month. As it stands, there is no set departure date.
News24 has reported that Svetakov’s net worth is an estimated $2,5 billion. The fortune largely stems from an electronics importation business and investment groups.
Donald Kau, the spokesperson for the V&A Waterfront, commented that South Africa is a member of BRICS and as such, no sanctions have been placed on the arrival of Russian-owned vessels in South Africa.
According to Gauteng News, the Mother City continues to be a magnet for superyacht owners and Cloudbreak visiting for a second time, has highlighted the ongoing global conversation regarding the sanctioning of Russian oligarchs.
However, it remains important to note that the presence of Cloudbreak is legal under South African law as the Cape Town harbour remains a popular destination for such vessels.
