A horrific incident unfolded at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort in the early hours of Saturday morning when a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) shot and killed two of his fellow soldiers before attempting suicide, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to News24, the soldiers were reportedly involved in an altercation before the shooting. However, the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, but authorities have launched a full investigation.
The SANDF and SAPS are working together to determine the circumstances behind the tragedy.
Meanwhile, SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
‘The SANDF, in conjunction with the South African Police Service, has launched a full investigation into the matter. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to ongoing enquiry. This is a deeply painful moment for the organisation and the military community at large,’ Tshabalala stated.
Tshabala then urged the public to respect the privacy of the affected families.
While details are still emerging, this incident raises serious concerns about mental health and conflict resolution within military ranks. The SANDF has not yet disclosed whether the shooter had any prior disciplinary issues.
