According to the Lowvelder, the incident occurred on the H1-4 route between Satara and Olifants camps in Kruger National Park.
Park officials launched a search for the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser who, on Friday, 9 August 2024, recklessly struck a lioness with his vehicle while towing a caravan.
The driver attempted to force his way between two parked vehicles observing a pride of lions, ignoring the warnings of another motorist who shouted for him to stop.
Undeterred, the driver continued forward, compelling the pride to scatter so he could push through.
A video of the incident quickly circulated on social media, sparking widespread outrage and prompting calls for the driver to be permanently banned from the park.

On Sunday, the South African National Parks (SANParks) Facebook page addressed the incident with the following statement:
‘Dear all,
Please be assured that the incident involving a vehicle bumping a lioness at a sighting is being handled at the highest level. Immediate action was taken yesterday morning as soon as we were made aware of the situation.’
The Lowvelder website reported that Kruger National Park’s spokesperson, Ike Phaahla said: ‘We have consulted with security officers. They picked up the registration number through our advanced camera technology and will be following up. People should realise they are not invisible when in the park.’
Phaahla added that the driver will likely receive a spot fine. In severe cases, like when an animal is run over, drivers may be blacklisted.
Previous offenses are also considered when determining penalties. Unfortunately, such incidents are becoming increasingly common in Kruger Park and other South African game reserves.
