Cheuvront had gone missing after hiking on Devil’s Peak, with her body found the day after her disappearance.
In light of these incidents, the South African National Parks (SANParks) addressed the situation, emphasising that while safety is paramount, recent crime statistics suggest a significant decline in criminal activities within the park.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw stated that crime reports showed a drop from 16 and 32 incidents in late 2023 to just six in July 2024 and three in August 2024, urging the public to rely on verified data rather than speculative claims.
‘Speculation can create undue alarm, undermining the effective safety measures we have in place,’ Louw remarked.
He pointed out that SANParks has not received credible evidence to support claims that their current strategies are ineffective.
Louw noted that the success of TMNP’s safety initiatives stems from a collaborative approach involving SANParks, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the City of Cape Town.
This partnership, which was revived in 2023, aims to enhance security through shared intelligence and resources, resulting in a measurable reduction in crime.
Furthermore, SANParks is developing a framework for volunteer-based partnerships to bolster their safety efforts.
The organisation is also in the process of expanding its ranger corps and enhancing its Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) team, supported by aerial and K9 units, per IOL.
As events continue to be hosted in the park, Louw reiterated the importance of compliance with safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all participants. He emphasised that collaboration remains key to maintaining a secure environment in TMNP.
