The Santa Shoebox Project has once again exceeded expectations, with a remarkable 74 751 shoeboxes donated this year, surpassing the 2023 total of 74 169.
This brings the grand total of children impacted over the past 19 years to an incredible 1 301 508.
Deb Zelezniak, CEO of the organisation, credits the increase in donations to a positive shift in South African finances, with inflation dropping to 2.8% and recent interest rate cuts boosting optimism.
‘While I had hoped for 75 000 shoeboxes, surpassing last year’s total during a time when many are still recovering financially is truly outstanding,’ said Zelezniak. ‘But more than just the numbers, it’s the joy and impact on the children that matter the most.’
The gifts have made a profound difference in the lives of countless children. Vernolene, a beneficiary, expressed her joy: ‘This was something I never expected. When I heard my name, I felt so special, like Christmas had come early.’ Ash-nay, another recipient, shared her gratitude, saying, ‘You really touched our hearts. We could never have imagined receiving gifts from others. It felt like an early Christmas.’
The donations have not only brought happiness to children, but also to their caregivers and educators. A teacher reflected on the experience: ‘Today, our learners received their special gifts. Parents are calling nonstop to express their thanks. Your generosity has truly made a difference in the lives of those who needed it most.’
Beyond the tangible gifts, the Santa Shoebox Project’s Virtual Santa Shoeboxes (VSS) are creating lasting change. Proceeds from the VSS contributions go directly to the project’s SSP Legacy initiatives, which include the development and improvement of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in disadvantaged communities. This year’s donations will help fund the construction of the project’s sixth ECD centre, with plans for a seventh centre underway. Zelezniak is seeking to raise R750 000 to bring this next project to life.
Looking ahead, Zelezniak has set a new goal: reaching 80 000 children with Santa Shoeboxes in 2025. ‘VSS pledges are already open, allowing us to prepare for next year. For those who prefer traditional shoeboxes, we encourage you to start collecting items during the summer sales so you’re ready to choose your beneficiaries in September.’
Zelezniak concluded, ‘I am deeply grateful to everyone who continues to support our cause. Your generosity has touched the lives of so many children, and we look forward to making an even greater impact in the future.’
