‘According to reports, police members received a complaint of a woman that had been shot. On arrival, [police] found the body lying in the front yard with a bullet wound in the left cheek. She was declared deceased by medical personnel,’ said Van Wyk.
After the body of the woman was discovered, the 19-year-old suspect was arrested at 16 Avenue, Leonsdale in Elsies River, as reported by News24.
‘He will appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of murder,’ said Van Wyk.
The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated, according to Van Wyk.
Residents of the area stated that the alleged suspect did not ‘resist arrest’.
‘He didn’t even ask questions. He just went with the police, and they loaded him in the police vehicle. He had no remorse on his face, which tells us police have the right person,’ said resident Shamiela Davids.
Dominic Williams, another resident, said that the arrested man was ‘linked to one of the gangs in the area’ and had the suspect had the tattoos to show for it.
‘Whether this was a planned hit on the woman, only the police investigation will tell,’ said Williams.
‘It is very sad to know that yet another woman’s life was taken in such a vile manner,’ Williams added.
An Elsies River community activist, who did not want to be named until ‘the suspect appears in court’, alleged that there had been an argument between the woman and the teen before she was killed.
‘It is unknown at this stage if the two knew each other. The community is in shock. We cannot believe that this man had the nerve to kill this woman like this. It is a cold and barbaric act of cruelty, especially during Women’s Month,’ said the activist.
‘If he is the killer, then he must rot in jail and never ever see the outside world again,’ they added.
