In a series of targeted operations, Western Cape police have arrested four suspects for illegal firearm possession, seizing multiple weapons and ammunition in separate incidents across the metro, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to the South African Police Service, the arrests, made between Friday and Saturday, form part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and remove illegal firearms from the streets.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended officers for their vigilance, emphasizing that these operations are critical in ensuring community safety.
Key arrests and recoveries
On Saturday, 05 July, members of the K9 Cape Town Unit and the Provincial Operation Command Centre Combat Team intercepted two men in a silver VW Polo linked to extortion. Acting on intelligence, officers stopped the vehicle on the N2 near Mew Way Road. A search uncovered a hidden Norinco pistol with 15 rounds under the passenger seat. The suspects were arrested, and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
During routine patrols in Delft’s N2 Gateway area, officers stopped a suspicious male in Inpuaanga Street. A search revealed a 9mm Norinco pistol and seven rounds of ammunition. The 22-year-old, lacking a valid firearm license, was arrested on the spot.
Early Saturday morning, Atlantis police conducting stop-and-searches in Sherwood Park apprehended a 17-year-old male in Buffelsnek Street. A 9mm pistol with seven rounds was found in his possession, leading to his immediate arrest.
In a separate case, a 20-year-old Mitchells Plain man was arrested late Friday night after police found him with a stolen Llama .45 ACP pistol and eight rounds. Further investigation confirmed the weapon was linked to a prior theft case in the area.
Ballistic Tests and Court Appearances
All recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine connections to other crimes. The suspects are set to appear in Khayelitsha, Bellville, Atlantis, and Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Courts, respectively.
These arrests highlight SAPS’ intensified efforts to dismantle illegal firearm networks in Cape Town. With ongoing operations and increased police visibility, authorities aim to disrupt criminal activities and enhance public safety.
