Operation guns off the streets are yielding success around Cape Town as the South African Police Service continues to confiscate illegal firearms.
The latest triumph comes after a 23-year-old man was arrested in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein on Sunday, August 8, for the possession of an unlicensed firearm with nine rounds of ammunition. According to a police statement, officers attached to the Lockdown II Unit reacted to information and conducted a search operation at two shacks in Nduli Street where they came across the firearm.
A 45-year-old man has also been arrested in the same vicinity for the possession of an assortment of drugs and cash believed to be the proceeds of drug trafficking.
Both suspects are expected to make their court appearances in Blue Downs. Meanwhile, members attached to the police’s Rural Flying Squad have also seized drugs worth R1.4 million in two operations on Sunday, four people have been arrested since.

In the meantime, Police spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba indicated that more than 120 000 written submissions were received on the Firearms Control Amendment Bill. This follows citizens expressing their concerns that no firearm licences may be issued for self-defence.
