The South African Police Service (SAPS) reopened a missing person’s case from 21 years ago.
Shevonne Matthews went missing from a park in Athlone 22 years ago during Easter while she was living with Katy Matthews, her adoptive parent.
According to Weekend Argus police spokesperson, Captain Nowonga Sukwana confirmed the victim’s biological mother reopened the case after claims that Matthews has been spotted in Mitchells Plain.
In May 2021 Weekend Argus published the missing woman’s story and social media responses hinted that she may have been seen in Mitchells Plain.
“There were claims that Shevonne was spotted in Mitchells Plain. People from the missing persons unit fetched the mother and took her to the Athlone police station to reopen the case. If that person is her, she will be a grown-up by now,” said the victim’s aunt.
Captain Ian Bennett, Manenberg‘s police spokesperson said all missing person’s dockets will remain open until a case has been resolved.
Matthews’s enquiry is ongoing despite the length of time.
