A stop-and-search operation conducted by the Western Cape’s Flying Squad on Saturday evening, 6 July, resulted in the discovery of a ‘significant firearms cache’ and drugs with the value of R3 million.
The operation started when officers noticed a ‘suspicious-looking’ silver Ford double-cab bakkie, according to Colonel Andrè Traut, police spokesperson.

Members of the Western Cape Flying Squad stopped the vehicle and after searching the vehicle and the 28-year-old driver, they unveiled an unlicenced 9mm firearm, various drugs and a substantial amount of cash, as reported by News24.
The suspect was arrested and interrogated, which led the SAPS to an apartment in the Bergzicht complex in Goodwood, where their search was extended.

‘Here, a further 19 firearms of various calibres were found, including an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun and other automatic and semi-automatic firearms, as well as an assortment of drugs valued at R3 million,’ said Traut.
‘We have reason to believe that the apartment which is leased in the suspect’s name was never used as a residence, but rather a storing facility for the firearms and the drugs,’ Traut added.
Traut did not rule out the arrests of more suspects, with Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, provincial police commissioner, stating that detectives assigned to the case would ‘dig deeper to uncover more’.
The male suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court today.
