Residents across large parts of the Western and Northern Cape are being urged to take extra precautions as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a very hot and uncomfortable weather advisory for Monday, 29 December, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to the advisory, extreme heat conditions are expected from 8am to 8pm, with daytime temperatures forecast to climb into the mid to high 30s. Affected areas include the interior of the Namakwa region in the Northern Cape, the Central Karoo, Cape Winelands, northern parts of the Garden Route, the Overberg and sections of the West Coast.
SAWS warned that the prolonged heat could have serious health impacts, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and those with underlying medical conditions.
‘When the temperature is extremely high, humans’ ability to cool their bodies through sweating is reduced. This can be a real threat that may lead to hyperthermia,’ the weather service cautioned.
‘In an extremely hot environment, the most serious health and safety concern is heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal if medical attention is not available immediately.’
Residents are advised to stay well hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours, seek shade where possible and check in on vulnerable family members, neighbours and pets.
