As of today, parents and caregivers are urged to get ready for the on-time school admissions application period for Grade R, 1, and 8 for the 2027 academic year.
The application window opens on 10 March 2026 and will remain open until 14 April 2026. This period is crucial for ensuring that your child is included in the first round of applications and assists the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) in effective planning for the upcoming school year.
The responsibility lies firmly with parents to ensure that their applications are submitted within this timeframe.
To streamline the process and avoid last-minute rushes, parents are encouraged to start gathering the necessary documentation well before the application period begins.
The documents required for all applications include:
- The learner’s most recent official school report (where applicable)
- Certified proof of identity of the learner: Birth certificate, ID or passport.
- For foreign learners: A passport, study permit, proof of application for a permit, or a copy of the parent’s asylum seeker or refugee permit. If these documents are unavailable, a South African Police Service affidavit will suffice.
- An immunisation card (Road to Health Certificate) – mandatory for primary school applications.
- Proof of residence, which may include a municipal account, lease agreement, or an affidavit confirming residency.
Once parents have compiled the necessary documents, completing the online application should be quick and straightforward. By preparing these documents before the application window opens, parents can lessen the stress and ensure a more efficient submission process.
The WCED’s online admissions system is designed for accessibility, being zero-rated so that parents can access the platform without incurring mobile data charges. I
nterested parents can visit the admissions webpage at https://www.westerncape.gov.za/education/service/learner-admissions.
The WCED also offers a wealth of resources to assist applicants, including clear step-by-step guidance and instructional video tutorials available on the same site.
In addition to online support, the WCED will establish pop-up admission sites throughout the province during the application window.
These sites aim to assist those who require help with the online application process or lack internet access altogether. Information regarding the locations of these sites will be made available on the WCED website, ensuring that every parent has the opportunity to apply on time.
‘We cannot stress enough the importance of submitting applications during the designated period. Each year, several thousand late applications create significant strain on the system and delay placement processes, making it imperative for parents to act quickly,’ WCED stated.
Ensure your child’s place at a school by applying on time, between 10 March and 14 April 2026.
