A 15-year-old Grade 8 learner has reportedly faced relentless bullying at the hands of older students at Sea Point High School.
The ordeal, which began in May, has seen the boy subjected to physical assaults, daily extortion for money, and chilling death threats intended to silence him.
The abuse escalated to a disturbing level recently, culminating in an incident that was captured on video, which has since circulated among social media users.
Concerned for his son’s safety and wellbeing, the student’s father, who previously remained quiet to protect the school’s reputation, has now taken a stand.
He has reported the matter to the police, pressing for justice and accountability regarding the harrowing circumstances his son has endured.
According to the Atlantic Sun, Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), confirmed the incident, stating, ‘Sea Point High School received a report from a learner’s father last night indicating that his son was physically attacked by three other learners,’
Merton assured that the parents or guardians of those involved have been contacted and disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the school’s Code of Conduct.
Merton noted that the matter has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS). She highlighted, ‘It is further noted that the learner had previously reported incidents of bullying, and the school had implemented support measures at that time,’ as quoted on Atlantic Sun.
The school’s promises of assistance raise crucial questions about the effectiveness of anti-bullying measures in educational institutions.
This incident comes just a months after Milnerton High School was thrust into the spotlight when a video surfaced showing a Grade 10 learner being assaulted by peers.
Eight Grade 11 students have since appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court, facing serious charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Six were granted R2,000 bail, while two minors received warnings. Their case has been postponed until January next year.
