Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the Police’s Diving Unit are continuing to search for the 23-year-old Gauteng man who went missing at Camps Bay Beach after he was swept out to sea by rip currents on Thursday, September 9.
According to NSRI Bakoven station commander, Luke van Riet, NSRI Bakoven and the City of Cape Town’s (COCT) water rescue network were activated at just after 1pm on Thursday following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress between Camps Bay Beach and Glen Beach.
“NSRI Bakoven and NSRI Table Bay rescue swimmers, COCT Law Enforcement, SAPS, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS, Netcare 911 ambulance services and Life Healthcare Response paramedics responded to the scene and conducted shoreline search efforts,” Van Riet said.
Van Riet added that the NSRI’s Bakoven sea rescue craft, Gemini Legend and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter also conducted a sea and air search after an unidentified surfer had attempted to reach the casualty before he disappeared underwater.
Meanwhile, rescue swimmers were also deployed into the water and performed free dive search efforts. However, despite extensive search efforts, there remains no sign of the missing man.
In the meantime, police have opened an investigation as the search continues.
