A massive search operation continues along the Gordons Bay coastline after a local fisherman was swept off rocks by powerful waves on Saturday morning.
The 43-year-old Blue Downs man was fishing near the Gordons Bay Battery, close to Rocky Bay, when disaster struck just after 10:30 AM, as reported by the National Sea Rescue Institute.
Multiple emergency services, including the NSRI, police divers, and medical teams, have been combing the rugged shoreline and rough seas since the incident. Despite extensive air, sea, and land searches, no trace of the missing angler has been found.
The NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew scrambled into action after receiving distress calls, quickly launching their rescue craft Spirit of Surfski. A coordinated response saw Cape Town Traffic Services, EMS rescue teams, and the Skymed rescue helicopter join the operation.
Police divers from the Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were also deployed to scour the submerged rocks and turbulent waters. However, strong swells and poor visibility have hampered efforts.
With hopes fading, authorities remain committed to the search. Police divers, supported by NSRI crews, are focusing on underwater sections near the accident site while shoreline teams scan for any sign of the missing man.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an investigation into the incident, though foul play is not suspected. The focus remains on recovery as weather conditions slowly improve.
Local officials have warned anglers and beachgoers to avoid the area, particularly near the rocky outcrops where unpredictable waves pose a serious risk. The NSRI has reiterated safety advice for shoreline fishermen, emphasizing the dangers of rough seas and slippery rocks.
As the operation enters its third day, the missing man’s family and friends wait anxiously for news. Emergency responders have expressed their condolences, acknowledging the traumatic ordeal facing loved ones.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. Those with details can contact the Gordons Bay SAPS or NSRI directly.
