Search and rescue efforts for the missing girl (8) who slipped into a canal on Thursday [July 9], and the man who tried to rescue her, have been suspended until further notice.

Fire and Rescue Service’s Jermaine Carelse said, “The City’s Fire & Rescue Dive unit from Roeland Street Fire and SAPS divers met up at the sewerage plant and have searched the area up to the Black River, near Berkley Road on Friday [July 10]. The search was suspended at 1pm. The divers stopped their search opposite the intersection of Black river Parkway and Berkley Road due the thick undergrowth in the river.”

The little girl slipped into a canal near 8th Avenue, Belgravia Estate on Thursday while playing with friends. A man had jumped into the canal to try rescue her, and also disappeared.

Search and rescue efforts were postponed on Thursday due to adverse weather conditions.
