A search is currently underway for at least nine missing people who were on a boat that is suspected to have capsized in the early hours of this morning, February 27.

According to Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, the search area extends between Oudekraal and Mouille Point, up to two or three nautical miles off shore.

“A semi-submerged inflatable boat was located 2 nautical miles offshore of Mouille Point, its suspected that the boat may have capsized in the early hours of morning, possibly somewhere between Clifton and Oudekraal,” said Lambinon.

The boat has been recovered and will be towed to the Police sea borderline in Cape Town Port.

NSRI Hout Bay, Bakoven and Table Bay are part of the search operation for the suspected missing people.

A number of people have already come ashore, reportedly from the capsized boat and are being attended to by emergency services.

“It’s not clear yet if all nine persons are missing but a search is underway as a precaution,” said Lambinon.

The EMA/AMS Skymed helicopter, the South African Airforce, ER24 ambulance services, Western Cape Government Health EMS, South African Police Service are assisting in the search.
