In a heart-wrenching turn of events, an 18-year-old male from Montana, Cape Town, is still missing following a tragic incident at Fish Hoek beach on Wednesday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The Coast of Cape Town’s lifeguards undertook an urgent rescue operation at around 11:22am after two teenagers were caught in dangerous rip currents.
Reports indicates that the group of teenagers, accompanied by a caregiver, had been enjoying their day at the beach when the two boys ventured into the water, unwittingly entering the perilous currents.
Darren Zimmerman, the NSRI Simonstown station commander, detailed the rescue efforts as lifeguards sprang into action, deploying instantaneously in front of the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club.
‘The CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network was activated swiftly,’ he noted, highlighting a coordinated effort that included NSRI Simonstown rescue swimmers, CoCT law enforcement, and Cape Medical Response (CMR), alongside various emergency services, including the EMS Metro Control and the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services.
In the midst of growing alarm, the lifeguards successfully rescued one 18-year-old male from Belhar, who was subsequently transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
As hope flickered for the second teenager, search operations ramped up significantly, employing an array of rescue resources. ‘The efforts included five rescue craft two from NSRI, two lifeguard rescue craft, and a Law Enforcement marine unit rescue craft together with the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter,’ Zimmerman elaborated.
Despite these extensive efforts, which spanned air, sea, and shoreline, authorities have yet to find any signs of the missing teenager.
Police WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services) has taken over the ongoing search, enlisting the help of police divers and a Police Air Wing helicopter to scour the waters for any trace of the adolescent.
‘Our thoughts and care are firmly with the families and friends of the missing teenager during this incredibly difficult time,’ Zimmerman expressed.
