The search is ongoing for a 20-year-old man from the Eastern Cape who was swept away by powerful rip currents while swimming with friends at Myoli Beach on the Garden Route on Saturday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) began its search at 7:23 pm on Saturday, scouring the sea and coastline for the missing swimmer last seen struggling near the Swartvlei River Mouth. As time passes, fears are growing that he may not be found.
‘Despite an extensive search, there remains no signs of the missing man,’ NSRI Wilderness station commander Jonathan Britton said.
‘Police [Water Policing and Diving Services] were activated and police divers, assisted by local police, NSRI Wilderness and NSRI lifeguards, are continuing in an ongoing search.
‘Our thoughts, care and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time.’
Britton warned beachgoers and water enthusiasts to be cautious as stronger rip currents are expected due to the full moon Spring tide peaking on Sunday.
Higher high tides and lower low tides could be hazardous for bathers, boaters, paddlers, and hikers and may cut off trails along the coast into the new week.
