In a recent visit to the SEED Rocklands Abundance Centre in Mitchells Plain, Alderman James Vos, mayoral committee member for economic growth, engaged with local youth enrolled in a Mixed Farming Systems learnership.
This initiative, facilitated by the City’s workforce development programme, Jobs Connect, recruited 15 unemployed young people for the programme.
The learnership equips participants with skills in plant and vegetable cultivation, supporting local feeding schemes and utilising plants and flowers for the production of various products, including hair products, washing powder and soaps.
The overarching goal is to empower these young people to start and manage their own agricultural businesses.

Alderman Vos emphasised the significance of Jobs Connect in opening doors for Capetonians and providing a streamlined and user-friendly digital platform that connects job seekers with opportunities.
The platform, launched in 2021, is data-free for MTN and Vodacom users, enabling users to create a digital CV and undergo a digital numeracy and literacy assessment.
The recent collaboration with Smile FM resulted in an impressive 12 914 job opportunities secured for Capetonians, exceeding the campaign’s target of 10 000 jobs.

Alderman Vos expressed his enthusiasm for the impact of the initiative, particularly in creating sector-specific employment opportunities, such as the 9147 jobs in call centres through CapeBPO, the City’s Special Purpose Vehicle in the industry.
The Jobs Connect programme is actively shortening the jobs queue and contributing to positive change in addressing unemployment in Cape Town. Job-seekers can register on the Jobs Connect website and complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to kickstart their journey to employment.
Business owners seeking talent can register as employers by contacting Leelyn Management at [email protected] or calling 021 558 1552.
