Following several marches and protests by women calling for more protection from government, it has emerged that a 7-year-old girl was allegedly molested at the Strandfontein Pavilion on Sunday, September 8.

According to Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), representatives kept the young girl and her mother safe from the public by seating them in the NSRI’s Strandfontein building.

“On a man being identified to these public members, other members of the public appeared to turn violent and the man ran towards the NSRI building,” Lambinon said. “At that stage, Law Enforcement officers had arrived and police were well en route. Law Enforcement officers used a section of the NSRI building away from where the girl and her mother were to hold the man until police arrived, and formally arrested the man on the allegations.”

Police are currently investigating the incident. There is no word yet as to when the suspect will appear in court.
