This morning, teams will return to the scene to continue their efforts to restore proper water flow following a string of incidents triggered by adverse weather conditions across Cape Town.
Ward 65 Councillor Donovan Nelson outlined the challenges faced by the emergency response teams. ‘For safety reasons, a staff member cannot be lowered into the drain, as the water level rises quickly and creates a serious drowning risk if rubble is disturbed,’ he explained.
As a result, crews had to pause their operations overnight, employing a bucket system to ensure the blockage is removed safely.
The flooding has wreaked havoc across multiple areas, affecting major routes and daily commutes. In the Southern Suburbs, significant obstructions have been reported, including:
- Constantia Main Road: Fallen tree obstruction.
- Kalk Bay Main Road: Severe water pooling.
- Protea Road and Buitenkant Street: Flooded intersection.
The Northern Suburbs have also faced their share of flooding, with notable incidents reported on:
- Bottelary Road, Brackenfell: Flooding between key routes.
- Jip de Jager Drive, Bellville: Flooding near the N1 interchange.
- Frans Conradie Drive, Kraaifontein: Water accumulation.
