Eight school governing body (SGB) members, including a teacher from the Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River, appeared at the Bellville commercial crimes court on Friday, July 30, for their alleged involvement in a security tender worth R3.1 million.
The group faces corruption charges regarding the security tender which the school appointed in August 2016. According to TimesLive, nine tenders were registered in November 2016, however, the tender was then awarded to ‘Daring Security CC’ which is managed by the chairperson of the SGB and who did not register for the tender.
After a thorough investigation, it then came to light that the legal process was not followed and the group was arrested between June and July by officers attached to the Hawk’s serious commercial investigation team.
A Bonteheuwel activist and Joint Peace Forum leader Nadia Mayman were amongst those who appeared in court. Bonteheuwel ward councillor, Angus McKenzie indicated to Cape {town} etc that the alleged laundering and theft of money is a smack in the face of learners from previously disadvantaged circumstances, as the Western Cape Sports School was established in 2007 for children with exceptional sporting potential from previously disadvantaged communities.
“I sincerely hope the court process will be completed quickly and sufficiently and that those accused will be brought to book in the sternest way possible. Stealing from the poor is an absolute disgrace and those proven to be responsible for it should be ashamed,” Mckenzie said.
