In an exciting blend of cultures, Cape Town has introduced a charming new seaside attraction: the ShuShu Sauna, a mobile wood-fired sauna inspired by Finnish tradition, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Created by Jari Salminen, a Finnish-Canadian carpenter steeped in sauna culture, the idea was sparked during a family visit to Finland when his partner, Mix, suggested building a floating sauna in Cape Town.
While rough seas dashed that plan, it ignited Salminen’s vision for a unique sauna experience on the city’s beaches.
Launched in January, the ShuShu Sauna quickly gained traction among Cape Town’s cold-water swimming enthusiasts, health aficionados and European expats.

‘South Africa lacks a sauna culture, so it’s about educating people,’ says Salminen, highlighting the numerous health benefits of sauna use, from improved circulation to better sleep.
The name ‘ShuShu‘ derives from the isiXhosa word for ‘hot.’ The mobile sauna operates on a weekly schedule, setting up at popular coastal locations. With space for 15 guests at a time, those interested in a guaranteed spot are encouraged to book in advance.
Salminen humorously recalls a record-breaking 22 people attending a session at Afrika Burn.
Typically, guests are invited to wear bathing suits and bring two towels: one for sitting and another for drying off. Private bookings have gained popularity, particularly within the Russian community, often including unique offerings like a local version of the Finnish vasta – eucalyptus branches used for gentle skin stimulation.
Sessions are affordable, ranging from R150 for half an hour to R300 for two hours. Participants are encouraged to alternate between sauna sessions and refreshing dips in the sea. ‘Listen to your body,’ advises Salminen, who recommends 15-minute sessions with a sand timer available to track time.
