A Boxing Day assault on the lower slopes of Signal Hill has left a woman injured and her dog dead, renewing fears about safety on popular hiking routes around Table Mountain National Park, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The incident took place above the Noon Gun between about 4:00pm and 6:00pm on 26 December, according to the Take Back Our Mountains community group, which is urging anyone with cameras to come forward.
Witnesses described the attacker as a young man wearing black trousers, a green hoodie and visible blue and white striped underwear, armed with a knife. The woman survived and required medical attention, while bystanders said she was ‘incoherent with grief’ at the loss of her pet.
The South African reports that the community group appealed directly for footage from homes and businesses along Military Road towards Green Point and the lower slopes of Signal Hill, saying: ‘Any relevant information or footage could be crucial.’
City law enforcement told reporters the victim had reported the case at Central SAPS and that SANParks planned an aerial sweep in the direction the suspect was seen running.
SANParks and local policing teams have in recent weeks increased patrols after earlier incidents on Signal Hill.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Central SAPS or submit footage to the Take Back Our Mountains group to assist investigators.
