A smash-and-grab incident near Langa has left one suspect dead, placing renewed focus on safety along a busy Cape Town route, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The incident reportedly took place on Jake Gerwel Drive on Wednesday evening, where motorists have previously raised concerns about crime at traffic lights.
In a social media post, Angus McKenzie said a vehicle came under attack during an attempted smash-and-grab. ‘From the information available at this stage, a vehicle was attacked and during the incident one of the suspects was reportedly shot and killed,’ he stated.
Footage circulating online shows a group gathered at the scene, with a body lying on the ground. Details remain unconfirmed and authorities have not yet released an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Earlier today, Cape {town} Etc issued a smash‑and‑grab warning for the intersection of Epping Avenue and Jan van Riebeeck Road in Elsies River, urging motorists to be alert or avoid the area where opportunistic crime has been reported.
McKenzie added that the stretch of road connecting areas such as Dunoon, Langa and Samora Machel has become a hotspot for criminal activity targeting motorists. ‘We will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available,’ he said.
The South African Police Service has urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue. Motorists travelling through the area are advised to remain vigilant, especially during peak traffic periods.
