Scammers have been making use of social media accounts in order to falsely claim that they are department employees/ representatives, offering assistance with government-subsidised housing applications.
Unsuspecting citizens have been targeted and offered government subsidised houses in various locations across the country.
The houses are being offered at the astonishing cost of R100 000.
In response to the ongoing scams, the department has clarified that applications for the relevant houses can only be processed through various provincial departments and municipalities.
The department further clarified that no organisation is mandated to facilitate this on the government’s behalf.
‘To qualify for a fully subsidised government house, applicants must meet specific criteria, including being a South African citizen, a first-time homeowner, and having a combined household income of less than R3 500 per month’ stated the department, as the South African Government News Agency reports.
Citizens and specifically social media users, have been urged to report suspicious accounts to the department or to their relevant municipality immediately.
To verify authenticity and avoid potential scams, citizens may contact the national Department of Human Settlements directly on 0800 146 873 or via email at [email protected]. A visit may also be paid to the local municipality offices.
