Soul Barrel Brewing, a brewery based in Franschhoek, took top honours in the African Beer Cup for its Soul Barrel Ale of Origin, a fermented ale derived of local grains.
The Ale of Origin is oak aged for three years, resulting in a complex, funky, lively and tart taste, providing flavour notes of mango and orange, wild fruit, tart lemon acidity and yeast biscuit earthiness with an undertone of honey and floral notes.
‘This is incredibly exciting for our team as we’re now the only brewery to win this award twice,’ the team said on its Facebook page.
‘More importantly Ale of Origin is a deeply personal and unique beer. It’s brewed according to traditional Lambic methods of spontaneous fermentation with native wild yeast blown in from the wind and long slow maturation in oak barrels.’
Belgian Lambic is one of the most traditional beers in the world.

Soul Barrel was founded by Nick Smith in 2016 after he moved to Cape Town. Smith attended the Master Brewers Programme at UC Davis in California and spent 10 years in the US craft beer industry before he decided to embark on a new adventure by starting Soul Barrel Brewing.
‘Winning with a beer that features local yeasts and grain is huge for SA beer. We believe in South African agriculture and this just the start of what can accomplish with local ingredients,’ the team added.
‘Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone who has supported us through Covid and beyond. Great beer only happens through community and we’re so proud of what our little industry has endured and accomplished and we can’t wait to continue shape our future together.’
